Notre maison

We have a cozy, 2-story brick rowhouse with central air conditioning, good security, large livingroom, well-equipped kitchen including dishwasher, small study and half-bath on the first floor. Both the downstairs and upstairs are loaded with books, so you will never want for things to read. We also have wireless Internet connection. The second floor has 3 bedrooms and bathroom with bathtub and shower. The large front bedroom has a double bed, the middle bedroom has a double bed and television set, and the rear bedroom has two single beds. The rear bedroom area also houses the clothes washer and dryer. The front bedroom also serves as a sitting room where we often read, watch television, DVDs and videos, or listen to the radio or music on a small CD player. Our enclosed backyard garden affords privacy if you care to sit outdoors.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. I am John, a retired journalist and author, who continues to work part-time on freelance projects. My wife Debby is a public school and Green Party political activist. We have two grown sons, both living with their families in the Washington, D.C. area. We have 5 grandchildren -- 3 girls and 2 boys -- ranging in ages from 5 months to 8-1/2 years (as of April 2017). We love to travel -- particularly to Ireland for five- and six-week periods in recent years. In Ireland, we have especially enjoyed week-long stays (or longer) in Dingle, Portmagee, Bere Island and near Killarney National Park. We are flexible regarding exchange dates.

Our house, which we have lived in for 44 years, is located in the gentrified Dupont Circle neighborhood in the center of Washington, D.C., just 8 blocks from the White House. Within just 2-to-6 blocks of our house we have 3 major supermarkets (Trader Joe's, Safeway, Whole Foods), a variety of good restaurants, drug stores (chemists), a community center, 3 live theatres, churches, 2 book stores. We are 5-to-7 blocks from 3 Metro (subway) stations (Red line, Blue/Orange line, Green/Yellow line), one to two blocks from major city bus lines; we recommend you see the city's numerous museums, galleries, memorials, monuments, the Capitol, etc. on foot or by Metro. We gave up our car 10 years ago and get around just fine on foot or by Metro or city bus. Major D.C. sites -- such as all of the Smithsonian Institution's magnificent museums and art galleries -- are free. By train or bus, we are just one hour from Baltimore, two hours from Philadelphia, four hours from New York City. By car, we are just one hour from Annapolis and Chesapeake Bay, and three hours from Atlantic Ocean beaches. Should you wish to rent a car for an out-of-town trip, rental agencies are located within 6 to 10 blocks of our house. (Street parking here is difficult.)
