Notre maison

We love our home. We've been in it for twenty years, and have raised our two daughters here. It's a large, Craftsman-style house (nearly 3000 square feet) dating from the 1930s, and we've renovated just about every room in the place, doing most of the work ourselves. It has four bedrooms, three baths, a large den, and formal living and dining rooms. Our huge kitchen opens onto a 16' by 30' deck overlooking the Cane River Lake. Central air conditioning and ceiling fans keep the house comfortable. In back of the house, behind a wooden privacy fence, our garden is a nice place to have a glass of wine in the evening.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. We are Rodney and Cindy, both academics. Our daughters are now out of the nest, so we're free to travel in the summers for extended stays. We've been to Ireland, and would love to spend a month there next summer, especially in the western part of the island. Scotland and Wales are also places we've visited and would welcome the chance to get to know better through a longer stay. I guess we're Celts at heart....
We'd like to be able to explore, so we hope that a car exchange would be agreeable for our house-swap partners.
We would treat anyone's home with the same care with which we treat our own.
Our only firm rule is no smoking.
So, we hope you'll drop us an email if you're interested in experiencing Louisiana for a month or so. This could be a wonderful mutual adventure!

Natchitoches is a small university town of around 20,000. U.S. News recently named it one of the top ten most attractive retirement communities in America. Several films have been made here, including "Steel Magnolias." It's not unusual to see John Goodman, Tim Curry, or Kris Kristofferson walking around downtown, which is just across the river from our house.
Louisiana is perhaps the most distinctive state in the U.S. The Cajun and Creole cultures are still very much alive here. In the immediate area are several museums, and the Cane River Creole Culture National Park, which has half a dozen plantation houses dating from the Civil War. Shreveport and its airport are a one-hour drive to the north. Two hours south by car is Lafayette, the "capital" of Cajun country, featuring great restaurants and live Zydeco music. Baton Rouge, the state capital, is three hours away. And New Orleans (which we have visited six or eight times since Hurrican Katrina struck the city in 2005), is just a four-hour drive away, all on interstate roads. Also four hours from here are Dallas and Houston, Texas.
So the big cities are in easy reach, but we think Natcitoches has a laid-back charm--good places to eat, live music, an open-air market every Saturday, the university, and friendly people--that would keep visitors to Louisiana right here much of the time. Natchitoches was the first French settlement (1716) in the Louisiana Purchase, and we still like to consider ourselves a bit Continental.
