Notre maison

Our home is set in 1.6 acres of birch forest, three miles from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It's peaceful and quiet, yet not far from the town and its activities. We have wonderful walking/crosscountry skiing trails all through the woods around our neighborhood, connecting with the extensive network of trails on the university campus. And across town is a ski area where National Championships have been held (because we have great snow through March, unlike much of the rest of the USA). Outside town are several downhill ski areas. March is an especially wonderful month in Fairbanks, with the world championship ice sculpture competition and our winter carnival with dog mushing races, a fur auction, dog weightpulling contest, and fireworks (there is too much light for us to have fireworks for the Fourth of July!). The aurora borealis is visible from late August to mid-April, weather permitting (there is an aurora forecast in the daily newspaper), and our deck is a great viewing spot. In June wild roses line our driveway, and mother moose sometimes bed down in our yard for an hour or two with their calves. August and September are berry picking times, and any month is good for a scenic walk. Autumn brings a halo of gold around our home as the hundreds of birch trees turn golden, and a drive in any direction reveals deep red colors in the low vegetation. Chena Hot Springs resort at the end of one road offers a splendid way to relax after a hike, plus tours of some very innovative geothermal energy technology which has kept a hotel made of ice and snow standing for many years, including all through summers with some 90-degree days.

Our house has three bedrooms; one is set up as a sewing room but could be used as a bedroom if needed, with an inflatable queen mattress and/or comfy pads. There is also a large (15' by 25') study in addition to the living room and kitchen/dining area.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. Mark has taken early retirement from his position as a professor at the university but continues with his research, so we hope to continue visiting London periodically as well as traveling to new places. We plan to spend more time in Fairbanks in the summers but we also want to travel so are open to suggestions for simultaneous and nonsimultaneous swaps in the US, Canada, and Europe (but we don't want to visit hot places in the summer months).

We love Fairbanks year round. Though we realize that most people who want to visit Alaska choose to do so in the summer, we have had winter guests and renters who loved the place! If we end up renting for a time when we are visiting elsewhere, we prefer to have our house occupied and are willing to "bank" nonsimultaneous exchanges to use in the future, so make us an offer. We're happy to provide more details of our home and location: just write with your query and we will answer promptly. We have many positive references from previous visitors who enjoyed their stay here and appreciated our good care of their homes. Make us an offer: we are often in need of a housesitter or wanting to do housesitting elsewhere. We have no pets but are willing to care for pets (except snakes and spiders!).

Fairbanks is a relatively small community (90,000 in surrounding area) but with more amenities than many places its size because of the tourists who come in the summer and the fact that the next large town is 360 miles away! The university provides many educational and cultural opportunities, and this is truly an artists' community, with many wonderful art activities. Denali National Park is 110 miles south--a not-to-be-missed star of our national park system. Chena Hot Springs Resort, 50 miles east, is an innovative facility using geothermal energy for more than its fantastic natural rockpool--it's also used to heat greenhouses in the winter and in the summers keep cooled a museum/hotel built of ice and snow. We will consider allowing you use of one of our Subarus for exploring around Alaska.
