Notre maison

Our country house is located on a very large property with meadows and woods for hiking. It is an antique house (by American standards) with its earliest part dating from the late 18th century, and completed, as it now stands, in 1848. The interior of the house is original, except for the bathrooms which are contemporary. The house is furnished with period pieces, some of them antiques and the kitchen is fully equipped and has a fireplace.

The main floor has a formal living room with fireplace, a large dining room with fireplace, a study with a TV set and comfortable seating. There is also a full bathroom with shower downstairs, where the stacked washer and dryer are located. On the second floor are three bedrooms, two large ones with queen sized beds with the master bedroom having a full bathroom with tub and shower en suite. A third, smaller bedroom can sleep two on single, trundle beds. A third bathroom with shower is off the upstairs hall.

The house has air conditioning for the upstairs bedrooms and separate heating zones for the downstairs and upstairs areas. It is also wired for music stereo in the living, dining room and master bedroom, as well as the kitchen.

In addition there is one room over the kitchen that is an 18th century garret, which is separately air conditioned, has a large desk and is used as an office.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. We are both retired. Joyce is presently a volunteer docent at the Asia Society in New York City and was previously working in education. Michael taught college history and foreign policy courses, but spent most of his professional life as an American diplomat. He is now involved with foundation work dealing with conflict resolution. We divide our time between our New York apartment and our country house when we are in the United States. We travel whenever possible, which is about three or four times a year. We are non-smokers and have grown children who do not live with us.

Our house is located on a rural, lightly traveled, paved road. It is situated reasonably close to the road, but there are no neighboring houses visible and there is complete privacy. The closest village is Copake, four miles away, which has a pharmacy, post office, two banks, gas station, convenience store, pizza restaurant and a diner. The nearest larger city is Hudson, about 30 minutes away, which is very picturesque, has several restaurants, two movie theaters, and a summer theater. A second city, a little further away than Hudson, but in the oppositer direction, is Great Barrington, Massachussetts. It also has several good restaurants, a movie theater, and chamber music concerts.

45 minutes away, south along the Hudson River, is the Fisher Center at Bard College, which has a world class symphony, The American Symphony Orchestra. In addition to it being excellent, the costs of performances are very reasonable. At the same location there are also movie festivals of old, but excellent films, cabaret performances, and outstanding theater performances.

We are very near to the Hudson River with boating, fishing and lovely views of the Catskill Mountains.

We are 20 minutes from the Berkshire mountains in Massachussetts and 45 minutes from Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony, as well as the summer homes of several theaters and the dance venue of Jacob's Pillow, all in the Berkshires.

And New York City is only two hours away by road or rail.
