Charming cottage with private garden close to UC Berkeley (between the campus and UC Village), public transit, and San Francisco. Known amongst our friends as the Tree House, our cottage is completely fenced in and located behind another house for maximum privacy. You rarely hear the neighbors, and, if I have my act together in time, may even be able to harvest fresh tomatoes from the garden during spring/summer '07. For fall, the harvest is still coming in. You can see trees and flowers outside all the windows, and there are many lovely places to sit in the sun or shade. Lovely deck for your morning coffee or evening musings.
Home is tastefully decorated with hardwood floors, tile, and an eclectic blend of antique and modern furnishings. Includes use of Netflix (up to 3 movie rentals at one time, you just mail them in as you use them and get another): dishwasher: DVD/VCR, etc. We're sorry, but this home is not appropriate for visits by children or pets, and isn't handicapped accessible.
Hugh is an academic in Creative Writing/Poetry, Mary a former antique importer who is returning to school and exploring a fair trade business opportunity. You will have ample reading material! We are soulmates who have been together nearly 7.5 years, married nearly 6.
We love travel and exploring new places together.
We're usually more open to other travel options, but at the moment we have some work to do on the house, so we're only considering very close destinations for very short durations. Thanks!
Berkeley is a charming university town across the bay from San Francisco.
Our neighborhood has the best of all worlds. It feels like a small town or the countryside when you're at home, yet you are a leisurely walk to gourmet shops, cafés, and a fresh indoor/outdoor produce market with many unique varieties of organic produce. We have two fresh fish markets nearby, as well as several bakeries, an organic butcher, organic grocery, and a variety of California and ethnic restaurants, both casual and upscale. Join the local sailing co-op in Berkeley and enjoy amazing Bay views, or maybe kayak out to one of the wild bay islands.
Another fun area to explore is Solano Avenue, for window-shopping, cafes, and cinema, or the fabulous Gourmet Ghetto for yet a fourth amazing array of gourmet restaurants, including Alice Waters' Chez Panisse.
Public tennis courts and soccer field are about a 10 minute walk away. A 15 minute bike ride takes you to the university (or walk one block and take the #52 or 52L bus directly to campus and downtown Berkeley).
For day-trips to San Francisco, you can easily take BART. The station is a leisurely 15 minute walk, then 30 minutes to the center of town. I'm happy to write you an insider's guide to all the best places. The Bay area is also well situated to visit other N. Cal areas, including Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Napa Valley, Calistoga (natural hot springs), Big Sur, Muir Woods (redwood forest about 45 mins. away by car), etc.
