Notre maison

Our Dartmoor home is architect designed and was built in 2007, of local Tavistock stone, on the site of an old cottage. The house overlooks open moorland to the front and has distant sea views of Plymouth Sound to the rear. We have a spacious lounge/dining room with French doors to the deck; well equipped dining kitchen with dishwasher and granite worktops; utility room with washer and dryer; master bedroom with en-suite power shower, luxury "Tempur" electronic superkingsize bed, armchairs, plasma TV and double doors leading to Juliet balcony with beautiful views. Outside there is a large south-facing, sunny, well-tended rear garden; a patio with newly installed hot tub and ample parking space at the front of the house. Lots of privacy, yet only 15 min drive to bustling Plymouth city centre.
Please note: There are two further self-contained ensuite bedrooms that we let out to paying guests but our accommodation, detailed above, is not accessible to them.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. We are John Clay, recently retired Art & Design Lecturer, and Geraldine (Gerri) Clay a Nursing Lecturer at Plymouth University. We have a grown family who have flown the nest. We take good care of our home and hope that it will make a comfortable, characterful and interesting holiday base for others. Last year was our first attempt at a house exchange holiday although friends have been telling us for years that we have the perfect house and location to do it. We have two boxer dogs, Maisie and Lola, who will stay at our daughter's home whilst we're away and a little black cat Audrey who can stay home if visitors are happy with that but go to the cattery otherwise.

Our swap in 2012 with a family from Stuart, Florida was a great success for both parties and has inspired us to do more. We travel as a couple and love America (especially Florida, Las Vegas and California) as well as the Caribbean. We have agreed a swap to Sarasota, Florida for July 2014 but are now interested in looking further ahead to 2015 for a long haul trip!! However, we could be tempted to exchange for a week or so within Europe, or elsewhere within the UK, later in 2014.

Localisation

Quartier

We are 200 miles from London with good road and rail links, whilst enjoying a traditional English village lifestyle that cannot always be achieved in the capital city. The area is steeped in history and culture, as well as offering lots of activities for families. Our house is within the Dartmoor National Park but we have easy access to the A38 and M5 motorway just 6 miles from us. The ancient Maritime city of Plymouth, from which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed to America, is only 10 miles away and provides museums, art galleries, theatres, restaurants, bars and a vast number of visitor attractions. Our surroundings are truly idyllic and offer you the opportunity to relax, go walking, hiking or horse riding, play golf, cycle and experience wildlife such as Dartmoor ponies, sheep, cattle and deer on the doorstep. There are beautiful Devon/Cornwall villages and towns in every direction offering an abundance of traditional events, country inns and stately homes to visit. There are also literary and film connections since "War Horse", "We Bought a Zoo", "Pride and Prejudice" and "Alice in Wonderland" were all filmed recently nearby and many "Poirot", "Miss Marple and "Sherlock Holmes" books/films were set here.

The pictures here were taken by Gerri and John Clay, the owners, and most were shot within 3 miles of our home, although the beaches are about 15 miles away. Based in Dartmoor, visitors can easily travel to the neighbouring counties of Dorset,Somerset and Cornwall - the renowned Eden Project is less than 40 miles away. Overseas visitors might also choose to spend a few days in London before or after travelling to Devon by car, coach or rail. There are also reasonably priced flights available from nearby Exeter Airport to visit most European capital cities and ferries from Plymouth to Santander in Spain and Roscoff in France. It is no exaggeration to say that you could stay in our home for months and yet enjoy a different adventure every day.
