Notre maison

Our lovely family home is in central Twickenham, near Richmond and the river Thames, in leafy West London. This vibrant suburb of London is popular with families and the architecture is predominantly Victorian and Georgian semi-detached and terraced houses. Our clean and comfortable Victorian semi-detached house is in a quiet backwater of Twickenham, away from the hustle and bustle but with great restaurants, coffee shops, traditional English pubs and supermarkets all moments from the door. The house is on 3 floors and was built by the Victorians around 1855. Two years ago we hired a London architect practice to extend and refurbish our house, including excavating the basement to give us a large and luxurious kitchen/diner that leads onto a sunken terrace in the garden. We also have a spare double bedroom and en suite bathroom, plus another toilet and a utility room in the basement. On the ground floor are three reception rooms (one is used as a TV room, one is a reading room and the largest is a comfy open-plan sitting room with wood-burner and a huge picture window overlooking the garden). On the top floor there are 3 bedrooms, the master has a tiny en suite, and there's a family bathroom. The master bedroom has a Super King bed and our two other bedrooms on the top floor are used by our children and include bunk beds in one and an antique wooden single sleigh bed in the other. There are various options for additional toddler beds and cots, depending on your needs. It is important to note that, although our house has been beautifully designed and modernised, it has been done so within Victorian proportions. All the bedrooms are reasonable sizes, with best quality mattresses, duvets and sheets, but they are not huge rooms - the Victorians didn't build with penthouse or warehouse proportions in mind - two have original fireplaces. We have tried to tastefully modernise our home, with all mod cons - underfloor central heating, en suite power showers, utility room with two washing machines and dryer, two ovens, a warming drawer, boiling water tap, filter water tap, two dishwashers - but we have also tried to retain the character of this beautiful old house and you will find original cast iron radiators, original wooden flooring and staircases. Our large Victorian house offers you quality, deluxe living plus authentic charm and it was featured in Grand Designs magazine in July 2012 and won Grand Designs Best Extension Award 2013.

  1. We are a professional family of 4 - my husband, Simon, is a television cameraman and I produce children's TV programmes. Our two sons are 6 and 4. We have now completed two wonderful house exchanges (three weeks, with a family in Marseilles, summer 2013 and three weeks with a family in Barcelona in summer 2014). We are now looking for a 2 week or 3 week summer exchange in Europe, August 2015.

Our house provides a fantastic base for exploring London, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Europe. A few minutes walk takes you to Twickenham train station, with Central London a 20 minute journey in one direction, Windsor 20-minutes in the other direction. Heathrow International Airport is 20-mins in a cab. There are also easy bus and train links to wonderful historical local attractions such as Kew Gardens, Marble Hill House and Hampton Court Palace. We are only a few minutes' drive away from the M25 Motorway, which gives you easy access to famous English towns and landmarks, such as Oxford, Henley, Bath, Stonehenge, and Stratford upon Avon. For children and teenagers there are 3 adventure parks (Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures and Legoland) all just a 30-min drive away. On your doorstep, are playgrounds, wonderful river walks and parks, superb restaurants, friendly cafes, a Saturday Farmers' Market and quality supermarkets. A short walk along the river takes you to the larger town of Richmond, with great shopping, more fantastic restaurants, a cinema and a theatre. The village of St Margarets is in between Twickenham and Richmond and is a very British experience, with it's local butchers, health food shop and numerous bakeries and coffee shops.
