Notre maison

Our Victorian House combines period charm with comfort and convenience. One reception room is a family TV room with open fire, the other is more formal with antiques and a piano. The large kitchen/dining room leads out to the south-facing family-friendly garden (toolshed for bikes, patio for barbeque and lounging). The master bedroom has an en-suite shower and WC, the children share the bathroom (bath, powershower & WC). The 'teenager' bedroom is rather chaotic but is large and has space for TV & computer. The two smaller children's rooms are under the eaves (dormer window & velux). Their two beds could be moved to share the larger of the bedrooms. As academics we each have a separate study crammed with books and with PC and broadband internet. The cellar contains the washing machine & dryer, a workbench, lots of junk and some decent wine.

Localisation

Quartier

Our house is one of twelve matching houses in an 'unadopted' cul-de-sac, which is a haven of calm, virtually silent at night. Local shops and the park are a five-minute's walk.
Manchester is a major provincial capital, with a rich 19th century heritage. It is second only to London for shopping, restaurants, museums (Science & Industry, Egyptian, Imperial War, costume, textiles),two art galleries, seven theatres, two world-famous football clubs, an Olympic-scale Aquatic Centre, the Bridgewater Concert Hall (home of the Hallé) and, in neighbouring Salford, the new Lowry Cultural Centre.
The house is close to direct 10-15 minute bus routes into the city. Unlike London we seldom suffer rush-hour traffic jams and can escape the city very quickly. The motorway network gives easy access to North Wales, Chester, Liverpool, Derbyshire Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District. Within an hour are numerous country parks, stately homes, the Pennine moors and the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope. In under two hours Alton Towers or Blackpool Pleasure Beach provide white-knuckle rides, and Birmingham and Stratford upon Avon more cultural entertainment.
The North of England is rich in treasures unknown to many Londoners. Manchester may not be an obvious holiday centre, but you will not be disappointed – unless all you want is sun and sand!
