Notre maison

Our home is a large, 400 year old Tudor cottage in a small 13th Century hamlet. It is tucked away and very secluded although we are right in the middle of the village and only two minutes from a bus stop. It has a very large garden with sunshine all day long. Downstairs, we have a large country kitchen with two separate reception rooms, a utility room, a shower and loo and spacious hallway. Upstairs we have an en suite in the Master bedroom and a separate bathroom. We have 3 double bedrooms and 2 single bedrooms. There is also a very comfortable double sofa bed. Our house is very peaceful, warm and comfortable. There is plenty of space for 8 people and we have an extensive garden which you can enjoy.

There are many things to do in Wiltshire where we live and we are only a couple of hours from London. Our village has been here since the Saxon times and you will be able to see many old buildings and churches. We live near Devizes where there was a great battle during the English civil war. You can climb Roundway Hill and explore the millennium white horse. We are surrounded by woods and fields and there are beautiful walks.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. We are Sheila and Bruce and we have four grown up daughters. We lived and worked in various places overseas when our children were little but while they have been growing up we have stopped travelling overseas. We are ready to start travelling again now that they are grown and Sheila has retired from Head teaching. Bruce is an engineer, specializing in timber framed buildings. We hope to swap with anyone who lives in a warm and sunny place near the sea. We would be happy to swap with a 2 person family.

This will be our second swap. We loved our first swap to Brittany because we lived just like the local families do and that really suited us.

Potterne village lies 2 miles south of Devizes, a thriving market town. Potterne has a 13th century church and Porch House which used to be the residence of the Bishop of Salisbury. There is a small shop, a post office and a traditional English pub. We are very close to Stonehenge and the standing stones at Avebury. We are also close (in the other direction) to the roman city of Bath. A visit to the Roman Baths to drink the waters is recommended. There are two Stately Homes worth visiting, Longleat and Bowood. Longleat has a safari park and coarse fishing. Both stately homes allow visitors and both have super adventure playgrounds for the children.

Devizes holds an important place in the history of Britain. The castle was at the heart of 12th century civil war as rival claimants Queen Matilda and King Stephen vied for the throne, and Devizes was taken and retaken several times. Matilda tried to hold Devizes Castle against King Stephen's army but when he threatened to kill her son she surrendered the castle to him. The original castle has been replaced by a more recent Gothic construction which is now a private residence. The turrets can be seen from around the town.

There is a very busy market on Thursday morning in the market square and a farmer's market on the 1st Saturday of each month. Devizes Farmers’ Market is a lively affair with a wide range of stalls and producers. The Wiltshire Museum situated on Long Street Devizes, is home to the best Bronze Age archeology collection in Britain. There is a Leisure Centre with swimming, sauna and Sports Hall facilities.

The Kennet and Avon canal runs through Devizes and the Caen Hill Locks, which are a flight of 29 locks on the canal, are a triumph of engineering, rising 237 feet in 2 miles or a 1 in 44 gradient. They are definitely worth a visit.
