Notre maison

Our home - which feels more like a small house than an apartment - is in the best location: a small, historic street two minutes walk from Kensington Gardens in one direction, two minutes walk to Kensington High St in the other. Buses to all areas of London are half a minute's walk away, with the underground train two minutes walk away for district and circle lines, with Notting Hill underground a ten minute walk away for the central line.

The apartment, which we have just finished renovating, is above a small gift shop, so we have our own front door which leads in to a narrow hall and then a small WC on the half landing. There are then three small, quite steep flights of stairs to living room and bedrooms so this is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. The house is nearly two hundred years old - with lovely Georgian panelling in some of the rooms painted a dramatic black - so it is an interesting mixture of historic and contemporary with a slick stainless steel kitchen that leads out on to a terrace.
The living room, just off the kitchen, has a dining table, vintage leather sofa and very cosy wood burning stove. The master bedroom is on the second floor and has a very large ensuite bathroom. The top floor has a shower and spacious bedroom with dual aspect windows, a double bed and a small sofa bed so in theory four people could sleep here - though the sofa bed would really be more suitable for children/teenagers or one adult. Generally, though, I think the place is better suited to just four people
One downside of being right in the centre, is that you do get traffic noise. So if you are not used to that you will need earplugs at night. But we have found we adapt very quickly to it - even coming from the complete silence of our Devon home. There is also a church nearby - they practise bell ringing on Thursday evening for one hour which I think sounds magical - but if you don't like church bells, you definitely won't like our home!

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. An architect and journalist, we have four children aged between 20 and 29 (yes, they still like to come on holiday with us!)and normally vacation in France, Italy, Spain or Greece but are open to new ideas. Although we travel with the children in summer, it will sometimes just be the two of us. We love the countryside and seaside in summer but are also interested in shorter trips to European cities.
For summer 2012 our preference is for somewhere very near the sea (but not too touristy) or in the countryside with a swimming pool.

The best thing about our home is the amazing location. It is in an historic street just off Kensington Church Street - two minute's walk to Kensington Gardens, two minutes walk to High Street Kensington underground station (District and Circle line). There are excellent supermarkets like Wholefoods and Marks & Spencer's food hall - again within two minutes walk. And you are spoilt for choice with fashion shops - Zara, Cos, Topshop, Gap, Uniqlo, Marks & Spencer are all on our doorstep.

In fact you can walk everywhere - Notting Hill/Portobello is ten minutes away - and we like to walk through the park to places like the Victoria & Albert Museum, which takes about 20 - 30 minutes. Though of course there is an amazing choice of transport to take you all over London. Notting Hill underground station (Central, Circle and District line) is a ten minute walk - this is probably the best way to get to Oxford Street as it is only three stops on the Central line. There are bus stops - with buses to Camden, Chelsea, Notting Hill, Knightsbridge etc - half a minute's walk from our front door. For those who prefer cycling there is also a rack of "Boris Bikes" at the end of our street. You really are spoilt for choice!
