Notre maison

Our warm and comfortable stone-built farmhouse - Little Trewern - nestles beside the beautiful river Monnow, with wonderful views of the Black Mountains from every window.

The house itself is very old, but it was modernised in the 1990's and we have renovated it again over the last 18 months. The heart of our home is the traditional farmhouse kitchen with its Aga-cooker, oak kitchen units, and hand-made table and chairs. This is truly a working kitchen and there is everything the keen cook could want!

On the opposite side of the stone-flagged hallway is the large "Music Room" with its grand-piano and many musical instruments which we play, (we are members of a local folk group) and a lovely table where we eat breakfast and watch the sun rise onto the Black Mountains in the early morning. The Dining Room proper is half-timbered, with a solid oak floor, cosy wood-burning stove and authentic traditional oak furniture. Next to the Dining Room is the guest bedroom (we run a B&B) with its own private bathroom. This room is quite special, for it is half-timbered, with a traditional carved Breton "marriage bed" and fabulous views of Red Darren. The private bathroom is luxury itself - take a look at the pictures!

Upstairs there are two spacious bedrooms with their own en-suite bathrooms, and a small bedroom that is ideal for a child.

Outside there are seven acres in which to roam. There are small fields, a large and pretty kitchen garden, a quite beautiful small copse through which a little stream runs, and a number of lawns where we go to sit, depending upon our mood and the mood of the weather. We have a "deck" where we eat meals outside. There is lots of outdoor-furniture, a swing hammock, a wood-fired pizza oven and a BBQ.

We have a small flock of hens, two border collies, a cat, and a horse named Janie. The hens need feeding and likewise the horse and the cat (she lives in the barn), but it is only a few minutes work each day. The border collies, Jester and Leo may be with us, with a friend, or with you! It depends on how keen you are on dogs. They are highly trained and gentle dogs, and win the hearts of our B&B guests every year!

Little Trewern is at the end of a long country lane and our own private farm-track. From the farmhouse you will hear no road noise, see no neighbours (except in the far distance!), experience the magnificent night-sky with no light pollution, and begin to wonder whether you need to ever move from the peace and quiet of this quite special place!

Of course we don't want to move either, but every now and then we need to go and see family!

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. We are a couple in our early 60's with grown-up children, and we are now able to travel both in-season and out-of-season.

We are both teachers, and we speak a number of modern European languages, as well as Welsh!

We have exchanged before in France, Germany, California, and also, more recently in Orkney. We are keen to visit different parts of the UK, as well as Europe and further afield. However, we are particularly keen to have access to a pleasant house in south or west London, maybe for the odd weekend in the year. That way you get a dose of the countryside and we get a dose of the city!

It will be necessary to feed our chickens (only a handful, but lots of lovely eggs in exchange) our cat, and possibly our border collies - although it is likely our dog will accompany us!

We are regularly asked to do an exchange with Australia, but, sorry, we do not have plans in that direction.

The area where we live, right on the border between Wales and England, is exceptionally beautiful and totally un-spoiled. On the Welsh side of the border the Black Mountains are part of the National Park of the Brecon Beacons, and so there is an excellent access to the peaks, moors and woodlands which make up this spectacular area.

On the English side of the border a network of footpaths, bridleways and county lanes provide opportunities for walking, cycling and horse-riding along the picturesque river valleys, and through the small villages with their ancient Norman churches (11th century AD), their black and white houses, and their authentic English pubs with great food and real ale.

We are also near to the festival towns of Hay-on-Wye (which hosts the world-famous literature and arts festival) and Brecon (which has its own Jazz and Baroque weeks). There are atmospheric castles and old manor houses to visit, as well as working water-mills, small farms, and heritage attractions a-plenty.
