Notre maison

Our home dates from 1870 and we've restored it in keeping with that period. We have lots of antiques but we welcome well behaved children - this is a family home, not a museum!

We have a huge kitchen/ dining room (3 rooms made into 1) where we spend a lot of time. We have a large sunny sitting room and a cosier TV/library room. Our 4 bedrooms are of a good size, two with large single beds (one is a small double) and comfortable fold down beds and two with double beds (one is super king size). We have a shower room and a separate more traditional bathroom with a shower over the bath. In the summer we eat many of our meals in our south facing garden and really enjoy spending time outside there or down on the beach.

We have already enjoyed three very successful house and car swaps (we have a Toyota Corolla Verso which seats 7) and are keen to do more.

We have a cleaner and should be able to organise for her to clean the house for you (including on the day you leave) and a gardener.

A filmmaker friend has made a short film of the house and garden and I think it says more about it then I can, so please do have a look to get a real insight (although our children's rooms have been redecorated since the film was made as they are older now.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. I am a university lecturer and my husband is a software designer. We have two teenage girls and a lovely collie dog (who will stay elsewhere whilst we are away). We also have 3 hens who live in a big run in our back garden and free range there when we are in. The hens can go and stay with friends if you prefer - or if you like fresh eggs every day we will leave them for you to enjoy (they are very friendly and compliant). We are all big animal lovers and would love to care for anyone's animals on a house swap. We enjoy cycling and have 5 good bikes here for our visitors to borrow. We like to swim and enjoy the sun - and like to visit culturally interesting areas

We live on a quiet street but the beach is only a very short walk away (3 / 4 mins). We are based in Joppa near Portobello and a whole range of local shops (including an award winning butcher and fantastic fishmonger) are only a 10 minute walk away (or a short cycle ride along the promenade). We have a lovely beach side cafe and pub /restaurants and a range of other good places to eat locally. There's a restored Victorian swimming pool and Turkish baths a short walk along the beach and we have 5 bikes which can be used to cycle from the house along some of the national cycle routes into East Lothian. Edinburgh city centre is 4 miles or 25 mins away on a bus (which leaves every 5 minutes) from the bottom of our road (or 7 minutes by train from the nearby station). Edinburgh, as Scotland's capital city, has fantastic national museums and galleries wonderful historic buildings and hosts the world's biggest arts festival in August.

We are also near East Lothian and the beautiful beaches including Yellowcraigs, Gullane and Tyninghame and picturesque villages such as Dirleton and North Berwick some of these can be seen in my filmaker friend's short film (left click to turn on HD for the full effect) The fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife, Loch Lomond or the historic cities of Stirling, Glasgow and St Andrews are within 1.5 hours drive or accessible by train and London is accessed by cheap flights (1.5 hours) or a 5 hour train journey.

In East Lothian North Berwick is only a 40 minute drive away and you can go on lovely boat trips from the harbour to see puffins and the gannets on the Bass rock:

Near North Berwick there are beautiful beaches and lovely walks and villages:

Our favourite is Seacliff beach at Whitekirk;

Tantallon castle, East Linton, Tyinghame, Whitekirk and Dirleton are all also lovely historic places to visit.

It’s also fun to go to see the Forth Rail bridge in South Queensferry and there are good boat trips from there too:
And we have the well preserved 17th centaury Newhailes house almost on our doorstep.

We are also well situated for hillwalking just 5 mins from Arthur's seat and Salisbury crags and a 20 minute drive from the Pentland hills see:

Scotland is famous for golf and we are near some of the world's best golf courses see
