Notre maison

Our house can sleep up to 8 adults and 1 baby. We have a large and sunny garden room, dining room, sitting room and kitchen, utility and pantry on the ground floor, plus a good sized ground floor bedroom right next to a shower room off the hallway. Upstairs we have the Master bedroom (double with ensuite); Bedroom 2 (king size zip link twin beds plus cot, also with wash basin). The Music Room can be used as an extra bedroom, it has a double sofabed and washbasin, and is next to the house bathroom.
Our house has plenty of parking space at the front, a courtyard accessed from the kitchen and dining room at the side, and a large garden with two sitting out areas at the back. There are fruit trees and flower borders. It is centrally situated in the old part of the village, which is a designated Conservation Area.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. Richard is a recently retired architect, and is particularly interested in historic buildings, including ours! He has designed the modern extension at the back of the house, which was formerly the coach house and stable, and now forms a lovely garden room which we use all the year round.
Jane is a retired town planning consultant, plays the saxophone in a number of amateur bands, and is a keen member of the local tennis club. Our two daughters are now grown up, and have provided us with four gorgeous grandchildren.

We are flexible with dates, and enjoy seeing different parts of the world, so hope for some exciting exchanges!
We are just back from a very successful exchange to Sri Lanka and have enjoyed six exchanges so far. Two shorter exchanges have been London (2012) and Paris (2013), a two week swap to San Francisco in September 2015, a week in Belgium in 2016 and a week in Herefordshire in 2018. We are very interested in doing short break swaps in the UK and Europe, or longer breaks further afield.

Quartier

Bishopthorpe is an attractive and very well equipped village, less than 10 minutes drive (or 20 minutes by bicycle - there is a cycle path) from the centre of York. Very handy for the historic city itself, plus York Racecourse, riverside walks, long distance cycle tracks. We are an hour's drive from the Yorkshire coast to the east, or from the Yorkshire Dales National Park (to the north west) and North York Moors National Park (north).
Bishopthorpe Palace is a beautiful ancient building on the edge of the village, on the riverside, and is the home of the Archbishop of York - the second highest clergyman in the Church of England, after the Archbishop of Canterbury.
In the village of Bishopthorpe is a small supermarket (just opposite the house), post office, chemist, bakers, butchers, hairdressers, three pubs (all do food), church, doctors and dentists surgeries. All these are in less than 10 minutes walk, while buses into York run every half hour during the day.
York is a great city for visitors - there are too many things to see and do for me to list! www.visityork.org gives you lots of ideas of what there is. We shall leave full details of entertainments, cinemas, theatres, museums etc. for you to see when you come.
