Hello from sunny South Africa! Our Beach Cove Cottages are two cosy, comfortable studio style cottages adjacent to each other and literally a few steps away from the beach at Ansteys Beach on the Bluff, a coastal suburb approximately 15 kilometres south from the Durban City Centre. Both units will be available – you can opt to take both cottages if there’s more than two of you travelling, or you can just take one of the cottages – it’s entirely up to you.

Our cottages are all on AIRBNB. We are Superhosts with mostly 5 star ratings for all our cottages. All cottages available for non-simultaneous exchanges, simultaneous exchanges or points if there is such a system available.

Set in a tropical garden in a quiet cul de sac, just behind the hustle and bustle of the main Bluff beach, our cottages are on our private property where we reside, yet it is very private and secluded and you will not be disturbed.

We have owned and managed our business, Ansteys Beach Backpackers and Self Catering Cottages for over 18 years, which is just 3 houses away from where we live. Our daughter Heidi runs her very popular Café at the Backpackers, where you will be able to enjoy delicious breakfasts, good filter coffee and scrumptious home baked treats.

The Beach Cove Cottages are very central in that all major tourist attractions, game parks and historic view sites are within a 15 minute to 3 hour drive away. Many of our guests love using our place as their home base to explore all that Kwazulu Natal has to offer.

As we are a surfing/beach family, and our business is based on the beach, our cottages are geared towards comfort and relaxation with a cosy and distinctly homely feel. Ours is a no frills, lived in and much loved place!

We have a lovely barbeque area right outside the cottages, and there's a table and benches at the front of the garden where you can enjoy the beautiful sunrises and activities on the beach or in the ocean. Many of our guests love enjoying al fresco meals at this beautiful setup!

Each one of the two cottages has it's own fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, full DSTV, Netflix and super fast fibre wifi connection. Both cottages are airconditioned and have fans.

The cottages are serviced daily by our housekeepers but this is entirely to your own discretion.

Should you need a bigger cottage, we have 6 sleeper cottages available at our Backpackers hostel 3 houses down. There is also a communal swimming pool, pool table and small bar at the Backpackers. Just let us know what you would prefer and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Please check out our website on - we look forward to welcoming you to our place!

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. We are a happy, easygoing family of five – Rudy Snr, Tash, Rudy Jr, Heidi and Justy. Rudy Snr, Rudy Jr, Heidi and Justy all surf and our lives revolve around the beach and surfing lifestyle. Mostly it will be just myself (Tash) and Rudy Snr travelling, but where possible we'd love for the kids to join us, even if just for a week or so.

Our son Rudy Jr is a Surf Instructor, professional surfer and currently lives in Huntington Beach California, and our daughter Heidi also surfs competitively and owns and runs her quaint and very popular little café on our backpacker premises. Heidi's boyfriend Justy is also a surfer and will be traveling with us at times.

We have owned and run a popular backpackers hostel and self catering apartments for over 18 years. We absolutely love what we do and have met many people from all parts of the world over the years and who have become part of our huge extended family.

Our home and backpackers is generally a hive of activity with someone popping in for a coffee party or just a friendly chat and we love it!

Rudy Snr and I haven’t travelled much and now that we have more time on our hands we would love the opportunity to travel, see the world, meet up with our friends and to travel with our kids where possible.

We've done quite a few Home Exchanges and have met wonderful, lifelong friends through most of these exchanges.

Situated on the beautiful unspoilt beaches at Ansteys Beach on the Bluff, a suburb 15-20 minutes drive south from the Durban city centre, the International Convention Centre (ICC), Sports Stadiums and Ushaka Marine World. The International King Shaka airport is a quick 35-40 minute drive away.

The cottages are based on our private property, and just 3 houses up from our business Ansteys Beach Backpackers & Self Catering Cottages, a popular backpackers hostel with 11 self catering cottages that we've owned and run for over 18 years. The property where the Beach Cove Cottages are located is very private and you will not be disturbed by other guests. It is a great place to base yourself while doing many day trips – either to the south or to the game parks (Hluhluwe Umfolozi) and St Lucia Isimangaliso Wetlands up north. (See bottom of this description for links and information regarding Game Parks, Midlands Meander, Drakensberg and the Battlefields)

The Bluff does not have many quaint eateries and pubs but there is a lovely coffee shop on our premises and a few other lovely restaurants and bars in the neighbourhood.
The popular Florida Road area is a quick 15-20 minute drive from the Bluff, as well as all the other good places to go to for entertainment - we will have a comprehensive list of all of the good places to visit for you when you arrive.

The great thing about where we are situated is that we are close enough to the city so that you can come back after a day in the concrete jungle and relax by the poolside in our tropical garden or go for a late afternoon swim in the sea or walk on the beach and explore the many rock pools, particularly at low tide when the rock pools are exposed. The sunrises here are amazing – there is nothing better than arming yourself with a steaming cup of coffee or tea in the morning to watch the sun rise - either from the benches at the front of the garden, or take a walk down the drive to the beach. Playful dolphins and whales are a regular sight here at Ansteys. Our beaches are lifeguard protected and there are shark nets. We love it here and we are sure you will too!

"2007 was the first time that I had ever been to Durban, South Africa. I decided that I would stay at a highly recommended place just 20 minutes south of the city center called Ansteys Beach Backpackers that offered everything from self contained flats to dorms for backpackers. My initial plan was to stay two nights before continuing on my trip up the East coast of South Africa. My plans swiftly changed and I ended up spending a week before moving on North, and then cutting my time short up north so I could spend another two weeks back at Ansteys. After traveling the entire East coast of Africa it was definitely the place for me. It is set in an ideal location with ocean views and the sea a mere 30 second walk away. In a quiet neighbourhood, with the city only a 20 minute drive away it really is the best of both worlds, you can relax on the beach or go enjoy the sights of one of South Africa's biggest citites.

Since my first trip I have been back three times, only on these trips I stayed at Ansteys for at least two months each time. It's subtropical climate is ideal in any season. The surrounding community has an unrivaled openness and friendliness, which is a big reason why I will continue to go back for the rest of my life. Beautiful location, unbelievable community, and don't get me started on how good the surf is. Beach break right out front that offers rights and lefts that will run or barrel depending on the tide and swell, Cave Rock 10 minute walk down the beach. Whether you want to surf, relax on the beach, or enjoy the unique blend of Indian/African/Dutch/English culture that Durban and the surrounding area has to offer. Ansteys is the place to be...I can't wait for my next trip down."

See the Big Five in their natural habitat!
The Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve is approximately 3 hour drive from Durban and about 45 minutes from the St Lucia Wetlands Park

Established in 1895, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is the oldest game park in Africa and is the only formal conservation in KwaZulu Natal where the Big 5 occur.
Set in the heart of Zululand, the game reserve offers visitors activities - from self guided walks, auto-trails, game drives as well as picnic sites. Viewing hides overlook pans and waterholes enabling visitors to see animals at close range.

Great to view crocodiles and hippos in their natural habitat!
The park was previously known as the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, but was renamed effective 1 November 2007. The word isimangaliso means "m
