Notre maison

Casa Rustica was originally an old farmhouse from when our one hectare site was an olive farm on the edge of this typical Portuguese village. It has been carefully renovated to retain many of the original features of old Portuguese houses. It has three double bedrooms, large lounge, kitchen/dining facilities and its private terrace is perfect for secluded sunbathing, evening drinks at sunset, or preparing a BBQ meal. The house is fitted with satellite TV and internet facility and has an air conditioning unit and a large woodburning stove in the lounge area. The house is set on the street level and sits above the swimming pool level and bar terrace with lovely views of the evening sunsets towards Tomar.
It is also possible at certain times of the year to swap with our two bedroom apartment (accommodates 3/4 adults only) in SW London in the village of Thames Ditton on the banks of the River Thames and thirty minutes from Heathrow and 45 minutes from Gatwick Airport. ( photos listed)

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. Gijs and Linda came on a visit to Portugal in 2005 and were seduced by the nature, friendly atmosphere and hospitality of central Portugal. They then embarked on a long term project of renovating and remodeling the one hectare site that their Chalet and Camping business - Redondo Lodges now occupies. The house we wish to swap is their own private home which is an open plan fairly modern construction which comfortable accommodates five persons, with its own large pool and beautiful views across the lake and the mountains on the other side towards the Spanish border.

  2. Gijs is a retired geologist originally from the Zeeland area of the Netherlands who has spent much of his working life outside of his home country. He is passionate about trees and nature, volcanoes and mountains !

  3. Linda hails from the West Coast of Scotland and left Glasgow in 1979 where she worked for BBC Scotland and then transferred to London working at the BBC Lime Grove Studios and later Shepperton Studios. After twenty five years and two sons later, she met Gijs on the Surrey Hash House Harriers and together they embarked on their Portuguese adventure.

Localisation

Quartier

The surrounding area is largely agricultural and woodland interspersed with vineyards and olive groves in an unspoilt typical setting.

Two main attractions of the area are the historic town of Tomar to the west and River Zézere (and the lake Castelo do Bode) to the east of the location.
The nearest town of Tomar was founded in 1157 by Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master of the Knights of the Templar of Portugal. The Convento do Cristo (a World Heritage site) and castle are situated on a steep hill with beautiful views overlooking the town. In the town itself the Praça da Republica, the church of São João Baptista and the country’s oldest synagogue are worth visiting.
Tomar has modern shops, discos, cinema/theatre, good restaurants and hotels. There is a daily food market plus a large general market on Fridays. There is ample parking at the market, except on Friday, and in front of the station.

Castelo do Bode is an artificial lake on the River Zézere, which has been created along the river to provide a reliable supply of clean water for Lisbon and surrounding towns. It has a surface of some 50 sq.km and is ideal for swimming, boating and other water sports. Boat trips on the river are available in the summer season.
Further afield, beyond Tomar are the towns of Fatima, Batalha and Alcobaça and the city of Coimbra each with their own rich cultural history, going back to Roman times as witnessed by excavations in Conimbriga.
A day to the Beach is easily possible. The well known resort and marina of Nazaré is only 85km away, but the smaller town of São Pedro de Moel and the sheltered bay of São Martinho do Porto are also well worth a visit.
