Notre maison

NO EXCHANGES IN JULY AND AUGUST. NO EXCHANGES OUTSIDE MAIN CITY CENTRES.
When I'm not in OXFORD UK I live in an old peasant's house which used to have a wine making cellar where there is now have a library/office. The house was very rustic and at first it did not even have a bathroom ! It has remained the same on the outside but with joint efforts Alda and I have been changing the the inside and have made made it more modern and functional. There is only one bedroom in the main cottage but it is very spacious. In the garden there is a barbecue area plus a 5x10 meter pool, a laundry room and barbecue "common room", plus a small WC and an outdoor shower. The garage has space for two cars though only ONLY SMALL CARS fit in this very narrow lane! GARDEN AREA: in the garden Alda designed and had built two one bedroom fully equipped bungalows which we rent during the summer or use for visitors (home exchangers or friends). There is internet (Wi-fi) connection. There ia resident cat named Jimmy. In the past there have had 3 guests who are allergic to cats and yet there was NO problem as the garden is large and Jimmy can easily be kept at bay if need be!
PLEASE NOTE: NO EXCHANGES IN JULY AND AUGUST exceptions possibly only for exchanges with London, Boston,NYC or SanFrancisco. Maybe certain areas of central Paris or Berlin?
AND: We only accept proposals for NON-SIMULTANEOUS home exchanges.
Normally guests and home exchangers stay in the garden bungalows not in the main house but guests and exchangers with shared affinities often also spend a lot of time in the main house with me/us/Alda.Other guests have a very busy tourist agenda and they are never around. So far all exchange experiences have worked out very well for both sides. Alda can send you comments from our guest books!
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SECOND HOME FOR NON-SIMULTAENOUS EXCHANGES with us then perhaps you have a home that is large enough and has a guest bedroom and guest WC/shower to offer as hospitality instead? I often travel on my own so I do not mind staying in a guest room while hosts are in the house.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. When I'm not in OXFORD UK I am the "face" around there simply because I am the one with free time and fluency in languages.a woman in her mid-60's trying hard to be a writer. I am a retired development consultant who worked many years as director of development/aid projects in Africa. I lived in London UK for over 15 years where I worked for the extinct GLC (Greater London Council) and also as an official Police and Court interpreter and translator and language teacher. I also have some experience in UK academic research work. I was born and raised in Mozambique but my parents were Portuguese. I also lived 5 years in Denmark (Aarhus and Copenhagen) and studied high-school in Durban, South Africa. I am very international in tastes and outlook, like to travel and to share hospitality with kindred spirits. Thiis house in Afife is very much Alda's "labour of love" and I'm around whenever possible. Alda is a lawyer in her 50's whose office is in the nearby charming town of Caminha. From her office you can see Spain across the bay a 15 minute trip by ferry boat. I enjoy reading, photography, hiking, and music (classical, folk and pop from the 1960s). At present we are both trying to organise our lives between Oxford and northern Portugal and
I now I'm busy writing my memoirs.

CENTRAL LONDON (especially Kensington & Chelsea): we would consider a on/off exchange throughout the year: you'd have a holiday cottage in our garden and we (or most probably just me as I often travel on my own) would have a "pied-à-terre" in central London "my home town". Or we could negotiate: if I can stay in central London for 2 -3 months can we give you one of our bungalows for X amount of time for X amount of years? All suggestions are welcome. We are flexible.

Localisation

Quartier

Afife is a sprawling seaside village circa 12kms from the historic city of Viana do Castelo, 90 Kms form Oporto and 75 kms from the town of Vigo in Galicia Spain. Afife has 3 restaurants, a chemist open 9am-12 midnight, a large ocean front with a beautiful beach where one can take long walks and watch the sunset. There is also 1 small supermarket for everyday shopping plus a large supermarket on the main road to Caminha, circa 3 kms from our home. The beautiful pilgrimage old town of SANTIAGO de COMPOSTELA in Galicia-Spain is only 180 kms away, less than a 2 hours drive on the motorway.

To make the most of your stay you will need to hire a (small) car.
Sometimes by previous arrangement and petrol and toll expenses and if I am in Portugal then I might be free to drive you around, last year this worked out fine with a woman from Denmark traveling on her own who stayed here for 10 days. We are very flexible regarding all reasonable proposals and requests.

From here you can also explore the Atlantic coast of northern Spain, Galicia.

Or explore northern Portugal: you can take day trips by car to visit old historical towns such as Guimarães, Braga, Ponte de Lima, and of course Oporto which is Portugal's second biggest city. You can also go on a Douro River trip to see the Port wine vineyards.

We can also help you organize a trip up the River Douro to see the magnificent Port wine vineyards, we would highly recommend this trip even though you'd probably have to stay overnight in a hotel to get the most of your trip up river. Count on two extra days for your stay if you think you would like to go up the Douro!
