Situated 2 hours drive north of Auckland International Airport, Whangarei is Northland's largest city with an urban population of 47,000. Whangarei is known for its fertile farmland, beautiful native forests and stunning beaches.
Many beautiful beaches are all within a 30 minute drive from the city. The Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve located off the Tutukaka Coast is renowned as one of the worlds top dive locations, offering spectacular water clarity and variety of sea-life. There is good shore fishing also and excellent Big Game Fishing in season (December to April). The district has abundant native forest and a great variety of marked walking trails to suit any age or fitness ability.
If you want to go further field an easy one-hour drive north leads you to Paihia, base for the famous trips and cruises of the beautiful Bay of Islands. Here also you can catch the passenger ferry to Russell, New Zealand's earliest settlement. Alongside Paihia is Waitangi where the historic Treaty was signed in 1840.
Just a 45 minute drive west leads you to the Kauri Coast where you can discover the rugged beauty of the West Coast with its huge sand dunes and wild surf.
Whangarei is an excellent base for a laid back relaxing holiday and ideal for exploring the upper North Island.
