Township profile: Fairlie, population 800, lies in the foothills (330m above sea level) and at the junction of the inland and coastal roads on main route to the nearby Mackenzie Basin and the Mt Cook National Park alpine area. Two hourâs drive (190 km or 114 miles) south of Christchurch, the major hub for the South Island. Fifty km (30 miles) west to Lake Tekapo township inland, and 63 km (38 miles)east to city of Timaru on the coast. Fairlie serves the wider rural community and tourist trade and is a picturesque mixture of the old and the new. Town has a medical centre, pharmacy (drugstore), police station, golf club (low green fees), tennis courts, 7-day supermarket, two pubs, an award-winning restaurant and several cafes. Easy access to trout fishing in a wide choice of lakes and rivers, three ski fields, hiking walks and all outdoor pursuits. Usually frosty in winter (May to August) but rarely snows in the township (June 2006 was an exception for intensity of snow dump).
