Russell is the original capital of New Zealand, with a history going back to the earliest Maori and European settlers. It is located near the top of New Zealand's North Island - known as the "winterless north" because of its warm summers and mild winters. We are 3 hours easy drive from Auckland, in a town located right on The Bay of Islands, one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. Our home is architect designed, 200 yards down the hill to the water, completed in December 2006, and has uninterrupted views for 15 amazing miles out over The Bay.
I'm Ed and my wife is Wendy, recently retired, early 60's. I was in advertising and Wendy was a IT manager for a large insurance company (and also a lawyer - yep, another one!) We are Australians, lived all our lives in Sydney, but decided to move to Russell in 2005 because we basically fell in love with it. We have 2 cats, Koko and Yum Yum who we'll board out while you're here. We've had many very successful exchanges all over the world in the last few years with folks who have really looked after our home, as we have theirs.
We'll be traveling with our friends, two couples, also in their 60's. Although we have specified exact exchange dates in October 2011, at the moment we only really know for sure that we'll need 10 days that month, probably the second half. I'm sure we'll be able to agree times to fit in with your plans.
You will arrive by ferry (a 4 minute trip from the mainland) and travel 7 miles through the green countryside to Russell, a town of 600 - 1500 people, depending on the time of year. Over the Bay, 30 minutes away, is the Treaty House where the century before last the Maori & British signed a document that marked the commencement of today's New Zealand. The area abounds with beautiful sights, boat excursions, natural wonders and great fishing. Russell boasts 7 excellent restaurants, including the famous Duke of Marlborough Hotel, the oldest in the country. Why not have a look at http://www.russell.gen.nz for a more complete picture?
