Notre maison

Our house is an interesting architect-designed home set high on a hill overlooking the beautiful Wairarapa valley. It generates its own electricity with solar panels, and stores power in batteries. We cook on a wood fired stove that also heats the water. The house is heated by wood fires and supplemented with gas heaters when needed. It is designed to maximise warmth from the sun, and to be cool in summer. It is built to make the most of the views across the valley to the hills to the west, and curls around a large Kanuka tree that has a courtyard beneath it. The rooms are on several levels.
The main house has two bedrooms, and two studies one of which has a fold out sofa for extra sleeping. There are two conservatories, two living rooms, a library, two bathrooms, a kitchen and dining room.

There is a studio attached with its own separate entrance, which has two bedrooms and a sitting room, (or one bedroom, a lounge and a sitting room, depending on how you use it!) It has its own bathroom. Rooms are small, but easy to be in.

We are open to exchanging either the whole house if we are able to be away, or the studio. If the latter then we would share our kitchen with you. We plan to install a mini kitchen in it in the near future.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. We are a just-retired professional couple. Duncan is an historian and Jan is an academic (family psychology). We have large collections of books and music (mostly classical). We have two dogs (who would not be at the house when you are), and two Burmese cats who look after themselves other than needing their food dispenser filled every few days.

Localisation

Quartier

Although this house is high on a hill and set in farm country, it is just 6 minutes to the nearest town, Carterton, where you can get the train to Wellington and find a good French cafe, supermarket, and most things you would need. It is 15 minutes to Martinborough, centre of internationally acclaimed wineries, which also has many fine cafes. It is 15 minutes to Masterton, the main town in the Wairarapa region, and 14 minutes to Greytown which has boutique shops and cafes. It takes one and a half hours to drive to Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, or the train from Carterton takes about the same time and is comfortable and easy.

The immediate surroundings are serene and beautiful. All you will hear are the noises of some farm animals, the call of birds, and very occasionally a train in the distance if the wind is blowing from the west. Hawks fly near the house, tuis live in the trees around the house, and our chickens live up the hill from the house.
