Notre maison

Recently modernised and upgraded to provide an extremely comfortable second home in the fabulous Bay of Islands.

On the outskirts of Paihia and well away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, in a spectacular bush setting but only 2-3 minutes from the centre by car.

Built on a slope, the front of the house is unimposing with good neighbours who keep an eye on the property when we are away. Going inside transports you to a private world with a spacious interior, a huge deck and a light modern feel throughout. The main living area has a modern kitchen, dining area and large lounge and fully opening sliding glass doors opening out on to the deck, giving a complete indoor/outdoor feeling. The deck is perfect for an anytime barbecue with far reaching views over the adjoining bush reserve and with no other properties nearby.
Up a flight of 4 steps to the second and third befooms with a separate shower/ wet room and wc.
After descending the stairs, the completely private master suite has a bedroom with native bush palms brushing the full height glass on 3 sides, together with a wet room and dressing room., all on a separate floor under the main house and separated from the other 2 bedrooms. The master bedroom also has a small private deck for a quiet read or nap, again surrounded by native bush.

Single garage with washer dryer and outside parking for a further 3 cars to the front of the house.

Quartier

The town of Paihia is the centre of the Bay of islands holiday area. It has a good range of shops and amenities with many fine cafes, restaurants gift shops and hotels.

The essence of Paihia is as the base for exploring the 144 islands to be found in the bay and the starting point for the many excursions, fishing trips, sailing adventures, dolphin watching etc. It is essential to get out on to the water to get the best from this magnificent area. Many of the islands are protected by the department of conservation to provide habitats for Kiwi and other native species. Many of the smaller islands are uninhabited but all can be landed on and it is rare not to be able to find a deserted beach somewhere.

Adjoining Paihia is the village and treaty grounds of Waitangi that gives its name to the original treaty between the Maori and the British, which is still to this day the source of much disagreement between the Maori and the Pakeha (non Maori). A new visitor centre has been built in recent years taking the tourist and locals alike through the times before and after the signing of the treaty, through to the present day. In my opinion though the presentation does have something of a Moari leaning.

Also to be found at Waitangi is the Bowls club, where all are welcome, including beginners and children, for a roll up on Tuesday evenings through the summer. All equipment is provided. Next is the golf club, bordering the Bay and the Pacific Ocean. In a spectacular setting it is not excessively challenging for the average player but beware the 11th hole where the sea is just 2metres from the back of the green.

A short ferry trip from Paihia centre brings you to the historic town of Russell, the scene of early Christianity in the area. Now a beautiful quaint "Little England" village, Russell's early life was as a bawdy destination for sailors from whaling ships operating on the east coast New Zealand's north island. This rather suspect past is sometimes celebrated in street theatre put on by local residents featuring "vicars and tarts" interacting with visitors and tourists. Great fun.

Within a short car journey can be found many historical sites of settlements, battles and historic events, well worth a visit for students of New Zealand history. Bus tours to Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach also start from Paihia.
