We call this property "Manakau Hideaway". It is set among native bush and rural properties, but is only 7km from the town of Otaki, and 80km from New Zealand's capital city, Wellington. It has a diverse orchard, including plums, lemons, grapefruit, feijoa, apples and pears.
It contains a homely, comfortable 3 bedroom house, built in stone and timber with a typical NZ corrugated iron roof (recently repainted). It has two showers and one bath, three toilets (WC's) and is on 3 levels, set on a hilltop with views across the neighbouring farms.
The kitchen, whilst not ultra-modern, is functional and has everything you need. The lounge is spacious and opens out on to a concrete patio overlooking the property and surrounding farms. It has an open fireplace perfect for those cool winter evenings. But the climate means you will only need to set the fire in the June-August winter months.
There are many friendly native birds on the property: fantails, kereru and morepork. You may even see rabbits, and magpies & hawks, none native to NZ but certainly in abundance! And sheep. We allow our neighbour to graze his sheep on our paddock, so they are very close to see!
It is situated just off the main highway between Wellington and Auckland, so is easily accessible by car.
We are Roger and Brenda, both recently retired and enjoying being hands-on grandparents to our two Wellington-based grandsons. We have two daughters and have travelled many parts of the world over the past 20 years. We enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and origins, and recently hosted our 25th exchange student.
We would be able to offer use of a couple of vehicles to exchange, a Toyota Hiace 2.5 berth campervan and a Nissan Primera stationwagon. We also have our main home within sight of Wellington Airport, and may be able to offer limited use of this as well.
Manakau is quintessential NZ countryside. There are lots of trees and animals everywhere you look: cows, sheep & horses abound here in the Horowhenua region. There is a country store just 5 minutes walk away, a market garden next door and a country cafe in a converted church. They sell souvenirs as well.
The towns of Levin and Otaki are equidistant, north and south respectively. Levin (population 20,000) and Otaki (pop 5,600) both have supermarkets, libraries (with free wi-fi) and fast food shops. Our favourite fish and chip shop is in Otaki! There are some popular factory outlet shops selling cheaper brandname items in Otaki. Palmerston North (pop 83,000) is 45 minutes by car.
Waikawa Beach is only 8km west, well within cycling distance, but easily also accessible by car. It is safe for swimming and kite-surfing and is quite often quite deserted of people. Otaki Gorge, a popular tramping spot, is only 20 minutes drive.
