Our apartment is located in a 1500 building, whose foundations were laid on ancient’s Rome constructions. Here, in Campo Marzio area, there was TRIGARIUM STADIUM, with the “ AURIGI” ( TRIGA driver’s, men able to drive wagon pulled by three horses). Emperor Augusto called this area CIRCUS FLAMINIUS.

There was a lot of popular activity but because of Tevere river overflowing, all area was marshy; in Medio Evo age was reclaimed.
During this period there was mills, wheat warehouses with millers, dyers, cord’s man , butchers, fishmongers and low taverns.
Today all around streets still bear the name of those trades. For example Via dei Pettinari for shops where sheep’s wool was combined and then was spinning to make mattresses or cushions .
Also, was tanned vaccina’s (cow) skin and was born a roman food : Coda alla Vaccinara, you can taste it around our B&B in a typical Roman restaurant .
Rome in 1586 was divided in RIONI, here you are in Rione Regola the VII° Rione, the name is for “Renula” from “rena” the river’s sand.
The coat of arms is a gold stag in a deep blue background but nobody knows why.

In Renaissance, XVI sec., there was a lot of Patrizie and Borghesi family’s Palace with gardens.
The Regola Rione was very important because of San Pietro Basilica closeness and for this reason there was also a lot of pilgrim’s shelters.

Our balcony is in front of Palazzo Spada, in 1500 this palace belong to Cardinale Girolamo Capodiferro, after in 1626 belong to Cardinale Bernardino Spada who called this palace with his name, a lot of Popes stayed in this Palace and Bernardino Spada was a cultured man who collect a lot of pictures and sculptures and today you can visit a wonderful museum with also the Borromini Prospective.

In 1875 were built a protection walls against the river and the Rione Regola definitely change.

Today Campo de Fiori and also Trastevere for all roman people is the very heart of Rome , with a famous market , little streets , old building and palace, monuments fountains and churches , shops , craftsman and especially with the very roman people.
