Gubbio was an important centre for the Umbrians, as is demonstrated by the Eugubine Tablets (3rd - 1st century B.C.), the most remarkable epigraphic heirloom of pre-Roman Italy. They consist of seven bronze tablets which offer ritual directions for particular ceremonies, and also give indications as to the organization of the Eugubine city-state.
A lot of craft activities like ceramics, wood and wrought ironwork, hold a particularly prominent position, as well as the wholesome cuisine that offers typical local products: the "crescia" (an Easter ceesecake), several local wines from the hilly regions and mainly black and white rare truffles.
You can attend the traditional contest called "The Crossbow Festival" - whit arbalesters, dressed in typical period costumes - meet every year (the last sunday in May) in the striking setting of Piazza Grande.
