Our quiet, safe, open-air-living, contemporary Bali-style Eco lumbung located 10 minutes drive north of Ubud is situated on one very large lush garden property with amazing views of pristine rice fields in every direction. The lumbung is actually one of 3 homes on our property - built in a traditional Balinese rice barn style using coconut wood frame with woven bamboo walls and thatched roof. This building practice keeps the house cool both day and night. A conscious decision to use bamboo and sustainable building materials as much as possible was the goal for this home. Contemporary styling with Western comforts makes our lumbung cosy and completely functional for writers, artists, travelers or yogis with a keen desire to have a unique Bali experience.
The lumbung offers wireless internet throughout, a fully equipped Western style kitchenette with oven (a real luxury in Bali), an open air bathroom with koi pond, a large sofa bed downstairs for lounging inside, a wrap around veranda with pristine rice field views, lots of storage, and outdoor dining. Upstairs is a retreat into true Bali style with Western necessities; a thatched roof, gorgeous bamboo flooring, handmade 100% cotton batik sheets on a King size bamboo bed, mosquito net, a large work table/desk,and more of those gorgeous rice field views to the east and full moon rise.
The Lumbung has 2 staff to look after the property: Ketut our house cleaning women who does an absolutely fantastic job of keeping the house clean and tidy, she will also do your laundry, and Wayan the gardener, also fantastic.
We do have pets, 1 cat Pepper taken in as a stray by my daughter as a kitten, now fully grown and 2 inseparable dogs Vic and Bianca. These animals live mainly at the big house when I am not in Bali and are taken care of by the staff.
I came to Bali on a bicycle in 1985 and made Bali my full time home in 1986. I am a 60yr old designer, my 64yr old Aussie husband is an organic farmer. Because we are both self employed, we have more freedom to choose travel dates. We spend our time between Bali and Western Australia. I did a 1 month exchange outside Paris in 2007, an exchange on Cape Cod, and Peter and I did a wonderful exchange in NYC in 2012. We are ready for more.
Peter has never been to Europe so this will be his first introduction. The main idea is to have a snowy white Christmas somewhere where there is guaranteed snow(?) Is that possible these days? We are only at the beginning stages of our planning so nothing is yet set. We are thinking about an exchange for a week or so in Amsterdam as the possibilities of us flying in there is great and I want Peter to see this. Then a second exchange for another 2 weeks or so where there is snow - Strasbourg, Bavaria, Oslo? Surprise us. We are open.
Our house is located in a traditional Balinese farming village on the edge of brilliant green rice fields. This area is great for walking and bicycling. The cultural center of Ubud is only 10 minutes drive away and filled with some of Bali's best restaurants, art galleries, jewelry stores, and shopping. The Munivara Ashram is located just around the corner and the Puri Sunia Resort's Abangan restaurant is 1 minute away, Labak Sari (often voted #1 warung in Ubud on Trip Advisor is just across the street from Puri Sunia and has fabulous traditional Balinese food at great price. I also recommend Madani Warung - another Balinese style warung across the street from Om Ham. And 5min drive up Jalan Cinta is Green Kubu cafe. A definite must do, set in the rice fields and facing a typical tropical ravine serving traditional food at great prices. All great option when you don't feel like cooking or going in to town to eat.
There are many things to see in Bali such as Balinese temples, ceremonies, traditional dancing, Mt Batur volcano, and various beach locations. It is the magnificent Balinese culture that one should come to Bali to see and experience. Driving is not something everyone is inclined to want to try here in Bali so you will need transportation to and from my home. I am happy to organize a car and driver for you. Or for those more adventurous, renting a motorbike is an option and the easiest way to get to and from town on a regular basis.
