Our house was built in 1885 and moved to its current location in 1929 using barrels. It was the first house to be moved in its entirety in Iceland, and is one of the oldest houses in Iceland. As one of the cities oldest houses it is outer layer is protected by law.
But fear not, despite being old we have spent the last few years renovating it, as have the former owners who lived in it for 77 years. Its truly a unique house in the heart of downtown Reykjavik.
The house is hidden from sight when walking past it on the street, located in the middle of a big garden only accessible through a tunnel.
Having the house appear once you walk through the tunnel is magical.
This makes it very quiet and confortable, while still being at the heart of downtown. You feel like you are in a countryside cottage but in fact you couldn’t be more downtown.
Basement:
We have already renovated the basement, with a sizeable bathroom with a walk in shower next to the master bedroom and a convenient laundry room. We seperated the walls between the kids rooms, allowing for lots of space to play or sleep.
Middle floor:
In the middle floor we have a dining room, open kitchen, an old guest bathroom with bathtub and an amazing living room with a 5 meter high ceiling
Top floor:
In the top floor we have a tv area, overlooking the living room. From the tv area you can then walk into our extra bedroom, which has two 120cm beds. This room is in an original state, the way the house was built in 1885, giving you a glimpse of the cozyness that was in rooms before our current days. For me and my family this is our favorite room as we love to take naps there during the day, or even sleep there to hear the rain pounding on the rooftop.
Garden:
We have a small garden at the back of the house. It has remembered better days and our plan is to renovate it. However, the kids love to play there. We have a slide, a small tranpoline and a wooden playhouse.
During summer time its lovely to bath in the sun in the guarden as our house is largely protected by any wind that could be arround.
