Notre maison

The house is our labour of love- converted over a period of four years and only in regular use for two years so far. The local stone is beautiful limestone, roofed with the traditional Roman pantiles, and inside the beams and other features a source of admiration for everyone who visits. The fireplace is very cosy; although not centrally heated, there are electric wall heaters that do exactly the same job. There is more than enough equipment to ensure a pleasant stay, and we have local friends who look after the property for us. We only have friends, family and personal contacts staying there- it isn't a commercial let as we want to keep it in the best condition.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. Sandra is a retired telecoms manager and I am a Senior Careers Counsellor at a college in Solihull UK planning to retire (or go 'portfolio') this year. We have family in San Diego, and have just become grandparents! We want to spend more time there, but don't want to impose on our children for an extended period of any kind. If we can build up a combination of exchanges, affordable accommodation and staying with them, that would be our ideal for a long stay. We particularly want to spend time there in Jan/Feb 2010, but are happy to talk alternatives. We live in Birmingham UK in a small bungalow, just half an hour from Shakespeare's Stratford and less than two hours from London, and would be happy to discuss exchanges for that too.

The house is situated in an old rural hamlet just five minutes from the town of Melle, which offers a number of good restaurants and shops and a large colourful weekly market. Melle was an important resting place on the famous pilgrimage route to St Iago de Compostela in Northern Spain, and there are remarkable Romanesque mediaeval churches. This is typical rural heartland France, off the mainstream tourist track, yet within an hour of such attractions as coastal La Rochelle and its satellite resorts, the mediaeval city of Poitiers, the Cognac (true brandy) region, Limoges and its world renowned ceramics, and the famous theme park Futurescope. There are lakes, rivers, forests, chateaux (the Loire and its magnificent chateaux are just two hours), Roman and prehistoric sites- the list of attractions and activities goes on...
