Notre maison

I bought this house in a tiny village on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in 1999. I love to spend quiet time there and each day I swim several times in the quiet bay directly in front of the house a matter of a few steps from the front door. The house is of wood with very large covered balconies on the ground and first floors. It is a two story wood house with a full bathroom-lavatory on each floor. The upper floor shower has hot water. Outside there is a shower that is useful for washing off the sand and salt when coming in from the beach. The fully fenced lot contains a second house a few meters behind the first house. This second house I built in 2003. It may be occupied or vacant depending on your preference. I have a Mitsubishi SUV that seats up to 7 people, and the vehicle is available for your use (standard shift) or it can be stored at a friend's house nearby. The lot is fully fenced and has many special trees and plants on it in what is a mature garden. The tiny village has good bus service, two internet cafes, one bank, several good restaurants and a limited nightlife. It is directly on a national park and has wonderful, diverse natural attractions for visitors, locals and tourists. It takes about 3.5 hours by bus to get to Cahuita from Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose into which one flies. Alternatively, a friend will collect you at the airport or from a San Jose hotel (I recommend the Aranjuez). If photos are not up when you read this, they soon will be.

  1. I am a professor who travels a great deal and I live in several places when teaching duties allow. I write and have worked for various environmental campaigns. I like Cahuita because of the extreme beauty and because people speak both English and Spanish there. This is because the population is largely from Jamaica as many came from there to Costa Rica in the early 20th c. to build the Panama Canal. They spoke English as do their descendants.

Some of my favorite activities in Cahuita are early in the a.m., walking or running on the fine sand beach directly in front of the house, then biking in the neighborhood (where one can have fresh baked goods delivered to the house at 7 am), shopping locally for groceries, but also attending the weekly big fresh food market 40 km north in the port town of Limon (this is a very low cost local market with a huge array of organic and non organic fruit and vegetables along with some prepared foods, dairy and meats). I spend the mid-day in the shade with a fan on me, reading or writing. In the afternoon I usually swim and do errands and visit. In the early evening I might go to a restaurant for a drink and a meal, spend an hour at the popular local bar (Coco's), or walk in the town or on the beach or in the national park. On Sundays there is a small but very nice local market in the town hall. Nearby is a spectacular waterfall, the world's only sloth sanctuary (fascinating), a special and superb 'piscina natural' (a swimming pool made out of coral as it has worn away, but remains connected to the ocean), along with many other attractions (carvers, chocolate makers, craftspeople and artists, garden supply outlets with orchids). Bird watching is spectacular - whether from the front balcony or when walking around in the early morning. There are also wild sloth, many kinds of monkeys, and other wildlife. I could continue.....
