Notre maison

The house is on the highest point in the area, in a very large bush garden. The back of the house joins the National Park and, on one side there is a spare block of land with a large area of bush garden which koalas visit during the dry season. The next door neighbours on the other side are permanent residents and one speaks both French and German fluently. The house is open plan and the back of the house completely opens up to give you an indoor/outdoor feel. There are steps up to the house but they are easy and there is a hand rail. Although there are two bedrooms and a sleep out, I only accept two travellers.

It is an easy walk (about 5 minutes) from the house to one of the main swimming spots on the Island, Alma Bay, and to an excellent corner store, newsagency, hotel and a number of restaurants. A beautiful cliffside walkway as well as a road takes you to the main business bay, Nelly Bay, where there are such services as supermarkets, medical facilities and the ferry terminal.

En savoir plus sur nous

  1. Gayle is a retired secondary school principal who has lived in North Queensland most of her life and knows it very well. (Lots of tips for holidays.) She travels with a good friend who is also a retired educator. They have both travelled extensively (to every continent, including the depths of Antarctica), sometimes with home exchanges which have provided some wonderful experiences.

Magnetic Island is the only World Heritage island on the Great Barrier Reef that has a resident community. It is home to some 2000 people who live in four seaside villages on the eastern side of the Island. It is also a popular holiday destination. We have excellent local shopping, restaurants, cafes and a monthly arts and crafts market. There are also excellent medical facilities on the Island. The Island has 22 bays and beaches with gently shelving sand and excellent fringing reefs to snorkel. More than half the Island is protected as National Park with excellent bush walks up into the hills. Townsville, a modern university city and major regional transport hub, is just 25 minutes away on the ferry (14 services a day). Here there are art galleries, museums, theatres. It is also the gateway to explore the outback or up to Cairns and the World Heritage wet tropics region.
